Healthy eating habits that stick: what a year of food teaches you

Motivation fades; habits stay. How to turn a diet into a routine, using small defaults, repeat meals and weekly reviews instead of willpower.

Most people who reach their goal don't have more willpower than everyone else. They have fewer decisions to make. When the next meal is already planned and the ingredients are in the fridge, eating well becomes the easy option.

Build defaults

Decide what you'll eat for breakfast and lunch on weekdays, and keep it the same for a few weeks. Shop for those meals every week. You'll save time and money, and your calories become predictable.

Stack habits onto routines you already have

  • Prep overnight oats while the kettle boils in the evening.
  • Plan next week's meals on Sunday after the weekly shop.
  • Fill a water bottle when you start work.
  • Take supplements with breakfast, not 'sometime'.

Review weekly, not daily

A single day tells you very little. Once a week, look at average calories, protein and weight. If you're on track, change nothing. If not, change one thing, not five.

Plan for bad days

There will be late nights, travel and birthdays. Decide in advance what a 'minimum day' looks like: hit your protein, drink water and get your steps. It keeps the habit alive when the full plan isn't possible.

Looking back on the year

At the end of the year, look at what worked: which meals you kept coming back to, which weeks went smoothly and why. Those are the habits to keep. Then pick one new habit for the next quarter, not ten for January.

Quick answers
