- What to measure: oil, nuts, peanut butter and cheese are calorie-dense; healthy too, but count them by the serving.

Watch out: healthy but calorie-dense
These are among the best ingredients; they are just not low in calories. A serving is small, but it adds up:
| Food | kcal / 100 g | kcal / serving |
|---|---|---|
| 1 tablespoon of oil (14 g) | 884 | 124 |
| 1 tablespoon of peanut butter (15 g) | 588 | 88 |
| a handful of almonds (30 g) | 579 | 174 |
| half an avocado (100 g) | 160 | 160 |
| 1 tablespoon of honey (20 g) | 304 | 61 |
| 1 slice of trappista cheese (30 g) | 356 | 107 |
Two tablespoons of oil add 248 kcal to a tray of vegetables. That is not bad, but count it.

How to feel full on few calories
- Volume: vegetables, soup and salad fill half the plate for few calories.
- Protein: have 25-40 g at every meal; it satisfies best.
- Fibre: pulses, wholegrains and berries slow hunger.
- Cooking method: oven, grill or steam, and little fat stays in. A tablespoon of oil is about 120 calories.
- Measuring: weigh in grams for the first two weeks; after that your eye gets much better.
Are there “negative calorie” foods?
No. The idea rests on digestion using energy, but that is about 5-15% of the calories you eat (20-30% for protein), so 100 g of cucumber at 15 kcal never goes below zero. Low-calorie foods are still a good base for a diet.
Frequently asked questions
What is the lowest-calorie food?
In our chart it is pak choi: 13 kcal per 100 g. Vegetables and salad leaves generally sit between 15 and 35 kcal.
What fills you up for few calories?
Vegetables, soup and salad for volume, lean protein (chicken breast, fish, eggs, Greek yogurt) and fibre-rich food (pulses, wholegrains). Together they satisfy best.
What is the best low-calorie dinner?
Lean protein with vegetables. From our recipes, for example Tandoori-style Chicken Skewers and Garlic Chilli Prawn Courgetti.
How many calories are in fruit?
Berries and apples are the lightest: strawberries are 32 kcal per 100 g, raspberries 52, apples 52. Bananas (89) and mango (60) give more, but fit well too.
Is healthy food also low in calories?
Not necessarily. Avocado, nuts, olive oil and peanut butter are healthy but calorie-dense. Measure them rather than avoid them.
Are there negative-calorie foods?
No. Digestion uses about 5-15% of the calories you eat, so no food burns more than it contains.
